The Golden Empire (SBS)

Empire of Gold

Empire of Gold, or Golden Empire.

The Golden Empire Korean Drama follows three people in the late 1990′s, early 2000′s as they fight over getting control of a chaebol empire.

What is a Chaebol empire? It’s a type of business conglomerate that is most popular in South Korea. A chaebol empire is usually a multinational company with a chairman that oversees all the operations. There are many large corporate groups that are owned by families that fall under the Chaebol definition. The closest English term is ‘conglomerate’. Some examples are Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and SK.

So, back to The Empire of Gold.

The Empire of Gold based off of the IMF financial crisis of the 1990’s.

The three people who are trying to get control of this Chaebol are:

Jang Tae Joo (played by Go Soo)
Choi Seo Yoon (played by Lee Yo Won) – the chaebol heiress and one of the rivals.
Min Jae (played by Son Hyun Joo) – Jang Tae Joo’s older brother and biggest rival for the top spot in the chaebol.

Empire of Gold

The three main characters of the Empire of Gold. Oooh, it’s so ominous.

According to initial synopses, Jang Tae Joo rises to the top from meager beginnings from just being clever and smart, while trying to take care of his little sister. He falls in love with Choi Seo Yoon. He rivals his older brother, Min Jae, who will stop at nothing to get the top seat.

The drama seems really awesome, extremely compelling, and will definitely have you hanging off the edge of your seat.

Other characters:

Dong Sung (played by Park Geun Hyung)
Jang Hee Joo (played by Yoon Seung Ah)
Choi Sung Jae (played by Lee Hyun Jin)

The drama premieres July 1st, 2013, on SBS, for 24 episodes (Mondays, Tuesdays). Or, you can watch it on DramaFever.

First Look at Go Soo Headlining the Period Financial Drama Empire of Gold

While MBC Mon-Tues will continue on with its sageuk streak what with Goddess of Fire Jeongi slated to follow Gu Family Book, SBS is taking a breather from sageuk land and turning to another type of period drama. When Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love ends in a few weeks, up next will be Empire of Gold starring Go Soo, Lee Yo Won, Jang Shin Yang, and Son Hyun Joo. This one has been in production relatively under the radar and there doesn’t seen to be an young idol actor anywhere in sight in the cast, which probably accounts for its low profile online with the drama viewers.

Moody and Tense Official Character Posters and First Teaser for Empire of Gold

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but unless something radically pops up in the promotional materials for Goddess of Fire Jeongi with Moon Geun Young and Lee Sang Yoon to revive my flagging interest, I will probably check out its direct competitor Empire of Gold first when both premiere in two weeks. SBS is hoping EoG will win the critical and ratings acclaiming that eluded Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love during its run, and right now it has good reason to get its hopes up since this drama comes from the crack team that produced The Chaser last year.

Actor Go Soo Gets Fired Up In Teaser Trailer For ‘Empire of Gold’

SBS released a preview for Empire of Gold. The video clip is about 40 seconds long, and instead of focusing on character descriptions, the teaser went straight to Son Hyun Joo and Go Soo’s charismatic combat. The video opens with Son Hyun Joo’s heavy narration. He appears from within a dark shadow, dressed in a clean suit. “April is brutal. Spring comes, flowers blossom, buildings rise, if a new city is formed then wasteland disappears,” he says in a monologue.

Empire of Gold Releases Tense and Gripping Official Posters and Third Teaser

Ooooh, looking good Empire of Gold. Me likely, though one official poster is much better than the other. Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love ends this week and SBS must be breathing a sigh of relief to move on to more promising pastures with Empire of Gold transitioning the Mon-Tues time slot for the network back to the modern drama. It may be modern but it’s still a period setting going back two decades to the 1990s.
