The Golden Empire Korean Drama follows three people in the late 1990′s, early 2000′s as they fight over getting control of a chaebol empire.
What is a Chaebol empire? It’s a type of business conglomerate that is most popular in South Korea. A chaebol empire is usually a multinational company with a chairman that oversees all the operations. There are many large corporate groups that are owned by families that fall under the Chaebol definition. The closest English term is ‘conglomerate’. Some examples are Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and SK.
So, back to The Empire of Gold.
The Empire of Gold based off of the IMF financial crisis of the 1990’s.
The three people who are trying to get control of this Chaebol are:
Jang Tae Joo (played by Go Soo)
Choi Seo Yoon (played by Lee Yo Won) – the chaebol heiress and one of the rivals.
Min Jae (played by Son Hyun Joo) – Jang Tae Joo’s older brother and biggest rival for the top spot in the chaebol.
According to initial synopses, Jang Tae Joo rises to the top from meager beginnings from just being clever and smart, while trying to take care of his little sister. He falls in love with Choi Seo Yoon. He rivals his older brother, Min Jae, who will stop at nothing to get the top seat.
The drama seems really awesome, extremely compelling, and will definitely have you hanging off the edge of your seat.
Dong Sung (played by Park Geun Hyung)
Jang Hee Joo (played by Yoon Seung Ah)
Choi Sung Jae (played by Lee Hyun Jin)
The drama premieres July 1st, 2013, on SBS, for 24 episodes (Mondays, Tuesdays). Or, you can watch it on DramaFever.
